Regalia: Royal Edition, Tactical Turn-Based JRPG Coming To PS4 In 2018

If you’ve been starved of tactical role-playing games on the home consoles since the release of Disgaea 5, well there’s a new JRPG-inspired turn-based strategy game in works at Pixelated Milk set to release on the PS4 during the first quarter of 2018 called Regalia: Royal Edition.

The game sees players attempting to reclaim the glory of a kingdom, mixing in some basic strategy-oriented city management where you attempt to upgrade certain aspects of your castle while also improving the capabilities and strengths of your team.

The gameplay and features were detailed in a post over on the PlayStation Blog by the Polish game developers who had to admit that despite the fact that they aren’t actually Japanese, Regalia: Royal Edition is very much themed after the characteristics of a Japanese RPG.

Developer Bartosz Lojewski explains in the post…

“Setting out on our journey, we believed a JRPG is not so much about the country of origin, but a style – and we still believe that now, if not even more so. Both the Baldur’s Gate and Final Fantasy series are undeniably what one would consider role-playing games, but it is also clear that they represent very different approaches to the concept. A typical game made in the West has different design sensibilities than one made in the East.”

If you take a look at the actual gameplay, it’s hard to imagine it’s anything other than a JRPG. You can check out the trailer below.

The game features more than 30 hours of gameplay, calling back to the days of old when the journey unfolded across multiple acts featuring a variety of characters, each with their own driving motivations and desires, all while set against the typical grind to grow stronger and enemies to test your strategic mettle.

Regalia: Royal Edition seems like something from out of the PSX era, but that shouldn’t be surprising given that indie devs these days seem intent on trying to rekindle the fun and entertainment values in games that have been lost to the predatory art of loot boxes and microtransactions in AAA titles.

You can look for Regalia: Royal Edition to launch on the PS4 as a digital download during the first quarter of 2018.
