[Update 7/6/2016:] Burning Arrow has announced that The Other 99 has been delayed to August 25th.
[Original Article:] The Battle Royale concept moves away from the tried and true multiplayer designs found in many other games, and settles on a more intimate, single-player affair called The Other 99. It’s like a first-person version of Rockstar’s classic Manhunt fused with Rust. The story oriented game will be playable soon enough.
Back during the hectic time that is E3, developers Burning Arrow made a post explaining that The Other 99 would be entering into Steam’s Early Access. The page has gone live and been updated to reflect that this first-person survival title will be “coming soon”.
So what is it and how do you play? Well, it’s a typical survival game. You’re an average person abducted who wakes up on a mysterious Hebridian Island. You have no supplies and no knowledge of what’s going on… the only thing you know is that you’re part of the 100, and you have to get through the other 99 in order to survive.
Finding food, crafting shelter, acquiring supplies and building weapons are all part of the challenge. There’s a 33 second teaser trailer to give you an idea of what to expect from the upcoming single-player survival game.
According to the description of the game, there’s more than just killing involved… there are moral consequences to consider. As stated on the store page…
“Will you brutally murder all those who stand in your way? Or will you move silently through the forests, eliminating anyone that crosses your path? Just remember each person is unique and has their own story to tell and their own pieces of the jigsaw that makes up The Other 99.”
See, that makes the game sound very interesting. Will you have to deal with psychosis? Will you have to deal with mental breakdowns and panic attacks?
I’m glad a developer is doing more than just copycatting Battle Royale and slapping a multiplayer component on it. We have enough of those games (and a few more on the way) already flooding the market. Taking the concept and giving it a more intimate single-player vibe could rekindle the kind of tension and thrills that were present in Rockstar’s Manhunt series.
The Other 99 will be story-based, and will have a legitimate start to finish storyline to follow. They don’t detail how long the game will be, but they do mention that throughout the Early Access phase they’ll be adding new islands, expanding the locations and fleshing out the story and characters. They don’t exactly say how long The Other 99 will be in Early Access but they want to make sure they get it well and done before launching it in full.
You can look for The Other 99 to enter into Early Access next week on July 11th. For more info feel free to check out the Steam store page.
