Destiny Support For PS3, Xbox 360 Winds Down In August

It’s about time. Bungie is finally ready to move into the current generation of gaming (which is actually about to end starting next year with the Nintendo NX and Xbox Scorpio) by dwindling down support for the old-gen PS3 and Xbox 360.

According to SlashGear, Bungie has announced over on their official website that they will be limiting the support for the PS3 and Xbox 360 starting in August. The game’s newest expansion pack, Rise of Iron, will not be available for the seventh generation consoles, now known as the “legacy consoles”.

It’s been a whole decade since both the Xbox 360 and PS3 have been on the market (technically 11 years for the Xbox 360) and it’s about time that support for those consoles will finally come to an end. A lot of technological advancements have been held up in the gaming space due to publishers trying to squeeze every last cycle out of the CPUs and GPUs of the old and haggily seventh gen rivals.

In the case of Destiny, Xur will no longer offer newer exotics for players. Instead he’ll offer older exotics from the first two years of the game’s market availability.

They also revealed that trading player progression between the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, and the PS3 and PS4, will end come August. They show a chart showing how the cross-generational character support will cease in August.

Bungie offers a troubleshooting guide to help gamers make the process of transferring their character data over from the PS3 or Xbox 360 to the PS4 and Xbox One respectively. You can find it over on their official website.

Additionally, the Trials of Osiris and the Iron Banner events will no longer run on the Xbox 360 or PS3 starting in August. Gamers will only be able to enjoy those events on the Xbox One or PS4.

The game’s basic story missions, strikes, raids and PvP modes will still be available. Essentially everything from August backward will be accessible on the Xbox 360 and PS3, but all things beyond that will be exclusive to the newer systems.

Now if you’re one of those people who feel obliged to upgrade to the PS4 or Xbox One to play Destiny: Rise of Iron, you will need to first have a legitimate copy of Destiny: The Taken King. Activision wants to make sure they’re milking both the tits of your wallet, not just one.

You’ll likely be able to pick up a used copy of The Taken King for cheap before August gets here.

Destiny: Rise of Iron will contain all new maps, quests and a new raid boss to tackle. The likelihood is that this will be a big wrap up leading toward the announcement and unveil of Destiny 2 in 2017.
