Mass Effect: Andromeda Is Only 30fps On PS4 Pro

If you were hoping that the graphics bump up in specs for the PS4 Pro would mean higher-tier graphics output and performance for the current crop of games slated for release this year and early next year, you can take those hopes, put them under you shoe, stamp on them real hard and go sit on a bench and cry a little bit.

According to Gamespot, they managed to get in a few words with Mass Effect: Andromeda producer Fabrice Condominas who revealed that the game will be capped at 30fps on both the standard PS4 and the PS4 Pro. So the extra horsepower under the hood of the PS4 Pro won’t be utilized for increased FPS on games like Mass Effect: Andromeda. In fact, it won’t be utilized for increased FPS or resolution for games like Horizon: Zero Dawn either.

According to Destructoid, Guerrilla Games’ Jan-Bart Van Beek mentioned that Horizon: Zero Dawn will not run natively at 4K and it still seems to be stuck at 30fps. Even more than that, Game Informer interviewed Christian Gyrling, the lead multiplayer programmer from Naughty Dog, asking whether Uncharted 4 would see any massive benefits or upgrades from the PS4 Pro. Gyrling responded saying…

“The main thing that we’re making sure of is that the frame rates are the same; there’s definitely no frame-rate advantage.”

So basically, everything already out is going to run the same and everything coming to the market is also going to run the same. So what’s the benefit of the PS4 Pro beyond 4K internet streaming?

I mean, I could understand if the system doubled up the frame-rates on the performance side. That’s a significant upgrade. I could also understand if it meant 2K gaming for some titles and at the bare minimum 1080p and 60fps for every AAA game coming to the market. However, that doesn’t appear to be the case and instead we’re getting vague promises about some form of 4K gaming (though the word seems to be changing and hinting at upscaling instead of native support) and the lack of an ultra-HD drive means that only people with toilet paper for money or those living in an ISP utopia where they don’t wallet-rape you for service will be able to afford 4K streaming.

Right now the PS4 Pro is a bit baffling. Other than making VR easier to use in connection with the PlayStation VR headset, I’m having a hard time seeing the benefits of the console at the moment.
