It feels like someone has taken over Sega and has started forcing them to make actual good decisions. It’s hard for me to believe that the same minds behind that awful Sonic ’06 is the same minds behind the brilliantly marketed and highly anticipated Sonic Mania, which is due out on May 31st, 2017 for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
The reason why I say that is because they recently unveiled the collector’s edition for Sonic Mania on all three systems, and it’s awesome… pure awesome. It features a 12” classic Sonic statue that stands atop a plastic Sega Genesis replica. The replica of the 16-bit home console is actually the base for the statue, but it nearly looks identical to the old-school home console. What’s more is that if you flip the little power switch on the base of the platform it’ll play the “Sega!” cue that used to chime in on the white and blue splash screen. You know the one I’m talking about right?
Dang, I’m already getting weepy-eyed with nostalgia.
Back then video games were awesome. I had a blast playing them, I couldn’t wait to turn on the system each and every day to play those digitized titles; I just loved gaming. That love has diminished over time thanks to always-on DRM, disc-locked content, on-disc DLC, microtransactions, exclusive pre-order bonuses, retailer specific download codes, and downgrades… freaking downgrades.
Anyway, the collector’s edition for Sonic Mania comes with a metallic collector’s card with a Sonic Mania download code, along with a collectible Sega cartridge cast that has a golden ring on it. Sega is actually brazen enough to sell this collector’s edition without an actual physical copy of the game included. Bizarre, I know.
The collector’s edition is available right now for $69.99 for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC. The package and a digital copy of the game won’t be made available until May 31st, 2017.
For those of you who don’t know, Sonic Mania is a throwback game featuring classic levels from the 16-bit era Sonic games, along with brand new zones and levels designed in the 16-bit style. So far a lot of fans and avid gamers have shown Sega nothing but fondness over Sonic Mania, and deservedly so. It looks like it’s going to be one of the best Sonic games made in years.
