Originally scheduled for release on January 19th, 2017 for the PS4 and PS Vita, Valkyria: Azure Revolution has received a name-change and a new release window courtesy of Sega. The publisher sent out word that the game is now going to go by the title of Valkyria Revolution (they knocked off the “Azure” part) and it will release both physically and digitally for the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 sometime during the second quarter of 2017.
They also announced that there will be a PlayStation Vita version of the game as well, but it will only be available digitally.
As revealed in the press release, the story centers around five friends joining a small military rebellion who must rely on wits and strategic combat tactics in order to overcome their imperial oppressors…
“Five lifelong friends consumed by personal revenge plunge an entire continent into a terrible war, sacrificing the lives of countless innocents for a cause based on twisted half-truths and outright lies. This “Circle of Five” use their combined influence in their political and military positions to motivate their small, economically blockaded homeland to rise up and become a powerful resistance against its imperialist oppressors.”
It reminds me a heck of a lot of Red Dawn. Only this time it’s a game set during an alternate history of World War II.
They’re utilizing advanced shaders for Valkyria Revolution, this time taking advantage of the Gouache shader system to improve the visual rendering and give the game more of high-quality, oil-painted canvas look. The developers are definitely taking advantage of the extra hardware provided by the PS4 and Xbox One this time around.
Sega also seems to be broadening their horizons as far as platforms are concerned. Usually these kind of JRPGs are limited to just PlayStation platforms, which is how it’s been for the last generation and a half. However, they might be seeing the benefit of adding Microsoft’s console to their game’s line-up in order to add some potential sales stats to the release of the very niche Valkyria Revolution. Maybe a simultaneous Steam release might help, too… maybe?
Anyway, you can look for the game to launch in the second quarter of 2017. For more info feel free to visit the official Valkyria Revolution website.
