Weekly Recap Jan 21st: Nintendo Switch Pre-Orders Sell Out, Resolution Woes Surface

Early benchmark results for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild have surfaced and confirmed that the game is only 900p when docked on the Switch and 720p on the Wii U. This has caused a bit of an uproar given that people were expecting more power from the Nintendo Switch, effectively putting it almost about on par to the Xbox One in terms of raw performance.

Despite the resolution woes, Nintendo had no reasons to rue the benchmark data given that the Nintendo Switch has sold out of its pre-orders at places like Amazon and GameStop ahead of its March 3rd launch. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime confirmed that they have about 2 million SKUs prepped for launch in March for the Switch. Whether or not the system can overcome the hurdles of the Wii U and manage to sell big will determine whether or not it can become the success that the Wii U was not. These stories and more in this January 21st, 2017 edition of the Weekly Recap.

Nintendo Switch Sells Out Of Pre-Orders

GameStop has already sold out of Nintendo Switch units, moving a set allotment of units ahead of the launch of the upcoming console. It’s on target to meeting the demand of the Wii U, which also moved 3 million SKUs during the first quarter of its launch. Speaking of the Nintendo Switch, the console is also set to receive an all new game from Atlus in the Shin Megami Tensei universe. The complete list of the top most watched games from Twitch have shown that gamers really weren’t impressed with 2016’s game offerings. Arc System Works announced that Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 is in the works for PS3, PS4 and PC. And the Honey Badger Brigade will officially head to court to battle The Mary Sue and the Calgary Expo this upcoming November.

Legend of Zelda Is only 30fps

Nintendo didn’t reveal it but the pixel counters did: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is only running at 30fps at 900p docked. It’s 30fps at 720p undocked. The game does suffer from some minor dips at times, too. It’s not perfect but it appears as if the Nintendo Switch will have Xbone style performance when hooked up to the TV. Speaking of gaming performance… Microsoft announced that their new streaming QOL update for Xbox One called Beam is going live along with the new Windows 10 Game Mode update. We still don’t know exactly what the Game Mode does, but it’s been hinted at improving the performance for games running in Windows 10. A new King of Fighters MMO is on the way called KOF: World, identical to the same South Korean MMO that came out a decade ago for the game. And Conan Exiles will have dedicated server support and Steam Workshop support for mods.

Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild On Wii U Is Trash

If you wanted to get Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on the Wii U, take note that the game is trash on that system, running at a paltry 720p at only 30fps. It’s not quite half of the Nintendo Switch’s resolution but it’s pretty bad. Speaking of the Nintendo Switch, a screen supplier has indicated that they’ve been contracted to manufacture 3 million units for the Switch during the launch window. They’ve also been given a standby order to make up to 10 million units for the Switch throughout 2017. And all the old and new Oculus Rift games will need to register to have their game rated by the IARC if they want to stay on the Oculus Store.

PS4 Nears 55 Million Install Base

Sony cleaned up during the 2016 holiday season, just barely beating out the Xbox One, who crept up on it on the NPD charts with a separation of just 400,000 SKUs. Both the PS4 and Xbox One moved over a 1 million SKUs during December, 2016 and Sony’s PS4 has managed to near the 55 million install base since launching in 2013. Beta sign-ups for Injustice 2 have opened up but there are trolls definitely taking advantage of the whole thing. A new Napoleonic war game called Holdfast: Nations at War is in development for Steam. Scrap Mechanic managed to sell 500,000 copies over the course of a year from 2016 to 2017, and The Culling is set to launch on the Xbox One in the Game Preview program later in 2017.
