Playtonic Games announced that development on Yooka-Laylee has ultimately finished and the core game is now complete. They made the announcement about the title going gold over on the official website.
They thanked fans and let everyone know that after 21 months of development, the game is now prepping to ship within the next two months for home consoles and PC.
Going gold is basically a term used to indicate that development is now complete and the team has burned the gold master disc that’s going to be used for manufacturing and distribution. Playtonic helped celebrate this announcement with a new poster-sized image featuring the two main characters amongst a bunch of golden parchments.
Yooka-Laylee is scheduled to launch on the PlayStation, PC, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. This is a huge opportunity for Playtonic to definitely catch a new wave of customers by releasing on the Switch, if the system manages to become a big seller this spring. There’s a lot of uncertainty and questions about the Switch, as a lot of people are unsure about how well a hybrid console will do in today’s market.
Well, Yooka-Laylee as an early launch window title could definitely help boost the appeal of the Switch. It’s designed by the same people who brought you the original Banjo-Kazooie, so fans of the old-school Rare titles are seemingly going to be the target demographic for the upcoming title.
Previous to the announcement about going gold, Playtonic released the toy box for backers to mess around with, giving them an opportunity to play-test the game’s platforming mechanics, controls and environmental interactivity.
We’ll see how well everything comes together when Yooka-Laylee finally lands onto the libraries of the PS4, Xbox One, PC and Linux on April 11th. The Nintendo Switch version is due for release either alongside the others or shortly thereafter.
