Mutant League Football Will Be Playable At GDC 2017

The revived Mutant League franchise will make a return to form at this year’s Game Developers Conference next month between March 1st and March 3rd. The game will be on display at the GDC Play Booth at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, California.

The demonstration will provide gamers with their first real look at the successor to the infamous Sega Genesis Mutant League Footabll. The new Mutant League Football is being crowdfunded through Kickstarter by Digital Dreams Entertainment, garnering more than $90,000 in crowdfunding with two weeks left on the campaign.

Those aren’t bad numbers.

The game is already looking like Blood Bowl and the original Mutant League. Unlike the old 16-bit games, the developers have put the newer Mutant League Football into 3D and have decided to mirror it after Midway’s Blitz: The League.

They’re currently planning on working hard on the game and getting it up and out on PC as early as late 2017. Of course, the Mutant League franchise was made famous on home consoles, so Digital Dreams will be releasing it on the Xbox One and PS4 as well. They’re estimating for a 2018 release.

The game will feature 14 different teams to choose from, solo gameplay modes, cooperative gameplay modes, and competitive gameplay modes. The game can be played between one and four players and they’re also planning to add online multiplayer support.

I used to love the Mutant League games from back in the day. They were great. What made them so good was the fact that they were legitimately made sports games but with the added violence, gore and mutilation that you would expect from Mortal Kombat. The television show was also way ahead of its time (or maybe suited for its time?) and sadly there’s no way a Mutant League cartoon would survive in today’s ultra politically-correct society.

Anyway, you’ll be able to check out the new Mutant League at GDC at the beginning of March next month. If you want to help contribute to the cause, you can do so by paying a visit to the Mutant League Football Kickstarter page.
