Halo 5 4K Patch, Halo Backwards Compatibility Coming Soon For Xbox One X

343 Industries announced that a 4K patch for Halo 5: Guardians will be arriving soon for the Xbox One X. It was revealed over on the Halo Waypoint website that Halo 5 will receive a 4K update patch for the Xbox One X soon. These updates usually clock in at about 100 gigabyte, so if you’re on a data plan make sure you’re well aware of whether or not you have the game set to auto-update or not if you get an Xbox One X because those 4K patches are no laughing matter.

In addition to announcing that Halo 5 would be receiving a 4K patch, 343 also announced that Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary Edition, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST and Halo 4 would all be joining the backwards compatibility ranks soon.

Unfortunately no release date was set on backwards compatibility, but they did mention that LAN play would be supported, the full single-player campaigns, and multiplayer… however they didn’t quite say if the online multiplayer would stay intact. They did mention that cross-play between Xbox One and Xbox 360 would be possible via LAN. Additionally, all of the DLC for the aforementioned Xbox 360 Halo games will be free from the Xbox Store, allowing gamers to grab all of the map packs and updates free of charge. That’s a nice little incentive.

Now one thing they also don’t mention is whether or not Halo 5 will maintain 60fps or if they’re going to compensate the 4K by going the checkboarding route, and maybe using dynamic resolution that scales up to 1800p instead of 2160p? Some games have had a bit of a problem maintaining native 4K on the Xbox One X, including BioWare’s Anthem and Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed: Origins.

We’ll likely find out closer to release; 343 has plans on showcasing the older games on the Xbox One at RTX in Austin, Texas, so we’ll likely get an answer then.

Personally Halo 5: Diversity Edition didn’t really fire off so well on all cylinders and the plot greatly suffered for it. Putting it in 4K won’t help the drawbacks or compensate for the lack of split-screen co-op, but at least the other four games will be available as backwards compatible titles on the Xbox One and Xbox One X.
