Square Enix director Hajime Tabata was recently on a Twitch live-stream as part of a panel at this year’s GamesCom event in Cologne, Germany. During the panel the famed video game director teased the possibility of Final Fantasy XV or some iteration of it appearing on the Nintendo Switch.

Gamnesia picked up the quotes from the live-stream, where Tabata-san stated…

“You asked the question, what other things do we have planned in the future? We can’t give you any complete, solid details right at the moment but for our policy writers we very much do want to move out and do as much as we can with the game, with the franchise. There’s another certain console out there people may be thinking of; sounds little bit like you guys, your name, “Twitch”… I think we’ll just leave it there.

 

“Everyone on Final Fantasy XV, they love this specific console that sounds a lot like “Twitch” – you may want to think something about that in the future.”

We may want to think something about that in the future? How about we think something about it now?Like if the game runs pretty crappy on the PS4 and XB1 at 30fps and barely 1080p, how on Earth will it run on the Nintendo Switch in docked mode, which is weaker than the Xbox One? What’s more, how will it run in portable mode when it loses about 60% of its GPU power?

Scaling Final Fantasy XV up to high-end PCs makes a lot of sense. It’s a big game with a lot of overhead processing required to bring the world to life in the way that is worthy of the Luminous Engine’s capabilities.

However, trying to take an already jam-packed game that has unbearably long load times on the home consoles and then attempting to squeeze that down to size into the Nintendo Switch is like trying to take all of Amy Schumer’s best material and squeeze it into a Netflix special in order to convince people that it’s two hours of “comedy”. The physics of funny just don’t work that way; it’s the same as the physics of technology not working that way either, unless they decide to gimp the game to the point where it’s about as thin and non-existent as Calista Flockhart’s career.

Anyway, he doesn’t expressly state the future of the franchise possibly appearing on the Switch is directly about Final Fantasy XV in the Twitch clip below, but he does leave it open for interpretation about which Final Fantasy game he’s talking about.

So technically, it could be another Final Fantasy entry that Square Enix has planned for the Switch… something a little more low-end, perhaps?
