It looks like GOG.com continues to grow its presence, adding some not-so-old-school classics such as Warner Bros. Entertainment’s The Suffering and its gory sequel, The Suffering: Ties That Bind. The games were a serious deep-dive into the psyche of a disturbed man, and it was hard not to have a long lasting impression of their content long after the credits finished rolling.
Gamers who missed out on the games back when they came out during the OG Xbox era can now pick up digital copies, DRM-free, over on GOG.com. You can get the original The Suffering and the sequel, Ties That Bind, for only $8.99 during the Warner Bros., sale on GOG.com. Alternatively, both games are available for $9.99.
For those of you who are uninitiated, The Suffering series followed a drug dealer named Torque, who claimed that he didn’t do nothing, but it turns out he did a lot.
The first game follows him through the escape of the maximum security prison, and all of the crazy aberrations he encounters along the way. The action is fast and furious at times, but there’s a strong survival-horror element to the game given the horrific creature designs, limited ammo, and focus on tactical combat.
The sequel, Ties That Bind, ratchet up the horror and psychological thriller elements to 10. It dives really deep into the psyche of Torque as he uncovers the truth about the monstrosities, and the reason for all the violence that surrounds him.
You could play the sequel either as a first-person or as a third-person shooter. The mix of melee and projectile based combat kept both games fresh, and they’re well worth checking out to see how real survival-horror is supposed to be done.
It’s nice to see that GOG.com continues to expand on their library of both well known and under-appreciated titles. Hopefully they can keep it up and continue to give Steam a bit of a run for their money.
