Fig backers are able to get in their first taste of playable gameplay from the upcoming CRPG, Pillars of Eternity II: Deafire, right now. Obsidian Entertainment and Versus Evil announced that the closed beta is currently live for backers.
A lot of the core features aren’t in right now but Obsidian has plans on unveiling more of the game’s content and detailing how they’ve overhauled the combat and implemented the new multi-class system.
They’ll also be monitoring feedback from the backers to help improve the core gameplay along the way.
Feargus Urquhart, Obsidian’s CEO, explained in the press release…
“Showing off all the new things we have added to Pillars of Eternity over the last two years is both exciting, and a bit scary. However, it’s key to who we are as a developer to find out what our backers think, and then using that feedback to make Deadfire an even more amazing game.”
Pillars of Eternity II is planned for release on both Steam and GOG.com, just like the original Pillars of Eternity.
If you want to get in on the beta and you’re a backer, just make sure you’re at the appropriate tier by checking the Obsidian backer page.
The original Pillars of Eternity managed to sell well over a million copies and was ranked as one of the best new RPG IPs this generation. The game did come under some fire for a joke that was in the game that was made by a backer, but it ended up being removed when Social Justice Warriors complained and the backer caved in to toward the pressure and changed it.
I’m sure Obsidian would love to avoid more controversies like the last one, but it all depends on whether or not they anger the SJWs with one thing or another: Maybe they don’t have enough representation? Maybe they have too many fair-skinned characters? Maybe they don’t have enough Communists? Maybe they’re too lenient toward Capitalism? Maybe they don’t have enough skinny, low-rise-jeans-wearing college thugs throwing trash cans through the windows of Starbucks? Who knows? It could be anything that triggers that lot.
