Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja released Nioh way back on February 7th, 2017, and although the game was often compared to Dark Souls and Bloodborne, the new IP managed to find its own footing and sold over 1 million copies as of March 2017. Nevertheless, Nioh found even more success as of May 28th, 2018, prompting Team Ninja to disclose that the action-adventure game has surpassed 2 million copies sold worldwide.
Team Ninja took a gamble and released their new IP Nioh with the help of Koei Tecmo a year ago, the good news is that the team’s risk paid off and they found much success through the new IP in that both companies want to expand on the game’s fictional world sometime in the future.
According to Koei Tecmo Games’ Yosuke Hayashi — who took part in the 2017 Creator Interviews — gamers and fans should keep an eye out in the future for something Nioh related. Here’s what Hayashi had to say during the talk thanks to ryokutya2089.com:
“I want Nioh to become even bigger. Please keep an eye out in the future.”
It’s not clear if Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja will follow-up on the 2017 game by making a sequel, prequel or spin-off later down the line, but we do know that back in March 2017 Nioh was the most successful Koei Tecmo game in the West.
In addition to the above, it looks like Nioh has settled in well with gamers around the world thanks to the newly released tweet stating that the 2017 game managed to move 2 million plus copies worldwide:
“Thank you everyone for continuing to
#DefyDeath. Nioh has now sold over 2 million copies worldwide! Were you able to find all the Kodama during your journey?”
