If you do a quick search looking for Capcom’s early 2019 Resident Evil 2 or Biohazard RE:2, you’ll find a lot of titles that feature the word “Remake.” Well, Mike Lunn, Brand Manager for Capcom, clarifies that Resident Evil 2 (2019) is not a remake and that there are differences with it, even for those who’ve played the original a thousand times.
I’m sure you’ve noticed differences when watching Resident Evil 2 (2019) trailer at E3, thinking that it isn’t a 1:1 remake, right? It seems that you are right taking into account Lunn’s explanation that publication site comicbook.com picked up.
The site elaborated on Lunn’s explanation when asked about what the direction of the upcoming remake is going to be like, to which he replied:
“It won’t be faithful one to one. For someone that’s played the game, some people played it once and some people played it a thousand times because it’s their favourite game. For the people that have even played it a thousand times, we wanted it to feel fresh. That’s why we don’t call it Resident Evil 2 Remake. It’s a new game built on top of the foundation.”
Although there will be similarities in Resident Evil 2 that mirror the classic title, differences will be present in the game to add a fresh spin. This includes a list of things like puzzles, jump scares, and enemy encounters to play out differently.
“So for example, there is a part where you’re walking through the police station, and a lurker walks by the window.
“In the original game that happens every single time. We don’t include that because of the jumpscares, the puzzles, and because we want you to be challenged by that stuff. We want you to be scared by that stuff, not just repositioned to a new part of the building, but sort of reimagined.”
And why you may ask? Well:
“Because we don’t want you to know exactly how the puzzles are solved, we don’t want you to know exactly where the enemies are going to be. We want to surprise you. So, we have changed things a bit. But on the whole, the main idea, the main arcs of the story are very similar. But there are going to be some new surprises in there as well.”
If you feel that the above quotes are worrisome, I’m sure Capcom will release more gameplay videos to help shape your thoughts before the game’s January 25th, 2019, release rolls around for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
