Turn 10 Studios announced that the prize crates in Forza Motorsport 7 will be disabled for Windows 10 and Xbox One gamers starting this winter.

The news was rolled out over on the Forza Motorsport website, where the developers revealed that after receiving a lot of negative feedback from the gaming community, they’re going to remove the prize crates and remove the paid tokens. In the news post they state…

“One major area of discussion for the team has been prize crates. While we’ve never charged money for prize crates in Forza Motorsport 7, their presence in the game has continued to be a source of controversy. The overwhelming feedback has been that this system feels out of place in the game. After careful consideration, we have decided to completely remove prize crates from Forza Motorsport 7. Similarly, paid tokens – which were a part of previous Forza games – will not be coming to Forza Motorsport 7 or Forza Horizon 4.

 

“Due to the complexity of removing prize crates from the game – while keeping access to Driver Gear, Mods and Badges – we expect that this process will be completed in the winter timeframe.”

In an effort to win some brownie points with the racing crowd, they will be unlocking more than 100 cars from the prize crates as part of the process of removing the prize crates altogether.

They state that the drive gear suits, mods, and badges will still be available through the prize crates as they continue the process of removing them from the game, but they also reiterate (repeatedly) that they offer no discernible competitive advantage.

The prize crates basically imitate the function of a loot box, but given the fact that some countries are cracking down on loot boxes, this could be Microsoft’s way of stepping away from the practice and aiming for a more legitimate form of monetization for future Forza Motorsport games.

The company has plans on launching Forza Horizon 4 this fall for PC and Xbox One.
