Death Stranding Will Allow Gamers To Play Together In A Connected World, According To Kojima

Hideo Kojima dropped a few more details about the upcoming open-world 3D action-stealth game, Death Stranding. The details came courtesy of a talk that Kojima had at the Tribeca Film Festival, where both he and actor Norman Reedus talked very briefly about the upcoming game.

USGamer scooped up some of the details from the talk, which was hosted by Geoff Keighley. Kojima explained that the game would allow players to connect to one another through the game, and that in some ways it was an allegory for the always-connected world we live in today, and about reconnecting with one another…

“”It’s an action game, an open-world action game, but it’s really new. It’s something new. There’s so many things happening in the real world–in America, in Europe–everything is actually connected by internet, but we’re not connected in the real world these days. I’m putting that in a metaphor in the game. So the player will have to reconnect the world in the game. You have a very alone and solitude feeling, but you’re trying to connect.”

According to YouTuber PythonSelkanHD, as Kojima talked about the interconnectivity of the game, they presumed that this meant that he was teasing some kind of online system that mimics the functionality of an MMO.

It’s true that Kojima did say that players would be connected together in the game world, possibly done in some way similar to Dark Souls, Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst or Gravity Rush 2.

Kojima explained…

“The key word is connection. There’s so many things in between, of course, but the theme of connection. I also threw in a really new idea in the game: you’re connecting the game and everyone’s playing it together and everyone will be connected, as well, and I can’t say anything else because Sony will be very unhappy.”

So yeah, it definitely sounds like some sort of connected world. It could be something as simple as a leaderboard or special event based on how many items are delivered, similar to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’s nuclear event, or it could be something more tangible, like seeing other players traveling around the open world delivering items from one place to the next.

Then again, given that Kojima said that Reedus’ character had a very lonely life filled with solitude, there’s a stronger likelihood that other players might be be part of the goo-monster symbiote that appears throughout the game.Alternatively, you might encounter other players while in the game’s first-person purgatory mode, which happens at intervals throughout gameplay. Perhaps you’ll encounter gameplay, clips, or “memories” unlocked by other players during that segment? I’m not sure how any of it works, but I’m sure we’ll find out at some point before release.

They also revealed that there will be lengthy cutscenes in the game, likely on par with Metal Gear Solid IV: Guns of the Patriots. Norman Reedus even gave Kojima praise in the form of saying that he would make a good film director, which is basically what Kojima has always wanted to do anyway.

There’s still no release date for Death Stranding but the game is scheduled to release at some point for the PS4. Many speculate that it may also be a cross-gen release for the PS5 as well.
