City Connection and Zerodiv are working with exA-Arcadia to restore and re-release Daraku Tenshi, also known as The Fallen Angels, in a complete edition for home consoles and arcades.
Japanese Nintendo is reporting that the game will be released in a finished state at some point in the near future. The game came out way back in 1998 by a small team working at a studio that made some really cool and really dark titles called Psikyo.
According to Niche Gamer they claim that the original release of The Fallen Angels was incomplete, but from what I played back in the day it seemed finished enough at least. The game, however, tanked and Psikyo’s team went back to work on The King of Fighters at SNK. Anyway, the Niche Gamer article states that the game will be fully completed by the team at City Connection, which came via a tweet from modeler Satoshi Hasegawa, who was attending an event for the Takadanobaba Mikado Arcade.

The Fallen Angels was visually one of my favorite games from the 1990s. There weren’t many other titles that had the sort of aesthetic appeal that it carried, mostly due to the large sprites, the zoomed in levels, and the high amount of detail and frames put into the animations. It’s a masterwork of technical excellence.
You can get a glimpse of what the gameplay was like with a longplay video of the content courtesy of YouTuber World of Longplays.
The character designs were definitely unique and the fighting was smooth and optically palatable. Since the game failed we also some of the character designs being copied over into The King of Fighters, with ‘Cool’ being used for Kryzalid’s design, and Maxima being a facsimile of Harry. Haiji’s design would also work as a template for K’ who appeared in King of Fighters ’99 a year after The Fallen Angels released.
It’s a shame they don’t make fighting games like that anymore. Then again, the fact that they’re making a complete edition for home consoles and arcades is remarkable, nonetheless.
Psikyo was known for making some pretty visually challenging games, such as Sol Divide: Sword of Darkness, which was a emo-style side-scrolling shoot-’em-up featuring angels and demons. It had a unique story, too. Interestingly enough Sol Divide did get a remaster for the Nintendo Switch last year, so it’s been long overdue that The Fallen Angels get its time in the spotlight as well.
Anyway, we don’t know when the game is coming to home consoles and arcades but according to Gematsu it will feature the roster of characters that it originally contained along with four other unreleased characters.
4Gamer had reported back on May 17th, 2019 that City Connection had acquired Psikyo’s catalog of games, and that The Fallen Angels was on the slate for a re-release, but now we have confirmation that it’s going to be a complete edition for home consoles and arcades.
