Naughty Dog revealed a new portion of The Last of Us: Part 2 during the most recent State of Play, dropping the release date — which is on February 21st, 2020 for PS4 — while teasing a glimpse of Joel. Despite all of that, though, Vice President of Naughty Dog, Neil Druckmann, has revealed the second installment will be on two-discs, while Naughty Dog Lead Game Designer, Emilia Schatz, says there will be no multiplayer.
You’ve read right, the days of multi-disc are coming back all thanks to Naughty Dog’s upcoming sequel known as The Last of Us: Part 2. The forthcoming title will require gamers and fans alike to rotate between two Blu-Ray discs to see the full interactive movie… I mean, game all the way through.
If you don’t believe me, don’t take it from me then, take it from Game Director Druckmann himself when talking to telegraph.co.uk. The publication site cites the Vice President of Naughty Dog saying the 2020 game will ship on two discs:
“It’s so ambitious the game doesn’t fit on one BluRay, it’s on two discs. It’s so ambitious that we actually decided to make it single player only. There’s no multiplayer in The Last of Us Part 2. We wanted to take all of the resources to make this the biggest game we’ve ever done.”
Falling in line with Druckmann’s sentiment on multiplayer comes Emilia Schatz — Naughty Dog Lead Game Designer — sharing the same info when talking to website usgamer.net:
“It turns out that The Last of Us Part 2 actually won’t have a multiplayer mode, contrary to reports last year saying otherwise. At an event earlier this week, Naughty Dog Lead Game Designer Emilia Schatz confirmed the lack of multiplayer in an interview with USgamer. In a follow-up after the event, Sony re-confirmed the news.”
So the bottom line is, there will be two discs required to see the game all the way through to the end, and if you want to play with other people you’re looking in the wrong direction, given that The Last of Us: Part 2 is all about a single-player experience.
It won’t be long before we hear more about this game since it releases in the next five months. Additionally, I bet more info will drop leading up to its release for those curious.
In the meantime, Naughty Dog is going to ship The Last of Us: Part 2 out on February 21st, 2020, across two Blu-ray discs.
