The Last Of Us: Part 2 Delayed To May 29th, 2020

Just last month, Naughty Dog and Sony announced during the State of Play for September that The Last of Us: Part 2 would drop for PS4 on February 21st, 2020. Well, that’s not happening according to director Neil Druckmann, since The Last of Us: Part 2 has been delayed to May 29th, 2020.

While The Last Of Us: Part 2 story is going to be driven by Ellie’s love for Joel and Dina, folks into that kind of stuff won’t see it anytime soon until the second quarter of next year. Although the survival third-person shooter game once had a Q1 2020 release, that’s no longer the case, according to Druckmann’s post on blog.us.playstation.com.

Here’s the write-up from Druckmann himself announcing that the game about teen angst vs. cultists will release later next year:

“Let me cut to the chase and get the news out of the way. The Last of Us Part II has a new release date of May 29, 2020.

I know. It was just about a month ago when we had our big blowout for the game, letting media play over two hours of it along with debuting our new story trailer and revealing the release date. The positive response we saw from our community was overwhelming. You can feel the energy among the team members. After working on something for so many years, it’s invigorating to get a glimpse of validation for all the hard work.

However, it was during the last few weeks, as we were closing out sections of the game, that we realized we simply didn’t have enough time to bring the entire game up to a level of polish we would call Naughty Dog quality. At this point we were faced with two options: compromise parts of the game or get more time. We went with the latter, and this new release date allows us to finish everything to our level of satisfaction while also reducing stress on the team.”

In case you did not read through the letter, Druckmann and Naughty Dog realized that certain parts of the game weren’t up to par and could either leave the game as is while making compromises or delay the game to raise it to “Naughty Dog quality.”

Throughout the write-up, Druckmann claims that the team is committed to bringing the highest level of quality when it comes to The Last of Us: Part 2′s graphics, “gameplay,” and more.

I should also note that there will be two discs required to see the game all the way through to the end, and if you want to play with other people you’re looking in the wrong direction, given that The Last of Us: Part 2 is all about a single-player experience. However, the Factions mode will be a spin-off and will have its own separate game.

In the meantime, Naughty Dog is going to ship The Last of Us: Part 2 out on May 29th, 2020, across two Blu-ray discs.
