Hugo Martin Stresses That Doom: Eternal Won’t Have Microtransactions

Doom: Eternal is an upcoming first-person shooter game by id Software and Bethesda Softworks. Although the title is nearing its final stages with a couple of months to go before launch, it looks like Hugo Martin is attempting to set the record straight in that the sequel to the 2016 edition of Doom will not have loot-boxes or microtransactions.

The creative director at id Software, best known as Hugo Martin, has seemingly laid out what fans can expect from Doom: Eternal content-wise, through a conversation with fans regarding microtransactions and unlocks.

Website dualshockers.com picked up on this conversation and reports that the FPS title will contain unlockable costumes, but players will have to play the game or earn XP to obtain them.

The site also sees Martin explaining that Doom: Eternal will not have a store and that these cosmetics will not “impact the game’s performance.”

Martin also stresses that the upcoming first-person shooter is a $60 game and not a “free-to-play mobile” title.

Here’s the conversation in question that the site found pertaining to the microtransaction concern:

The concern is warranted, especially in this day and age where a franchise like Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey released without microtransactions and now sports them like a mobile game. Sadly, this isn’t restricted to Assassin’s Creed, seeing as how Bethesda is trying to use the Creation Club as a workaround to fix non-live service titles like Fallout 4 or The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim into something that generates cash over time.

Although Bethesda could pull a sneaky one on us and have id Software implement post-launch microtransactions in Doom: Eternal, as it stands now, Martin claims that at launch, gamers won’t find anything that asks for more money but in-game challenges that unlock cosmetics and the like.

For those interested, Doom: Eternal will launch on March 20th, 2020, across PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
