Final Fantasy VII Remake Delay Won’t Change The Second Part’s Release Date

Not too long ago, we reported on Square Enix deciding to delay Final Fantasy VII Remake. This move would push the upcoming game’s release date back from March 3rd to April 10th, 2020. However, this delay will not alter or play a part in pushing back the second part according to Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda.

In case you happen to be out of the loop, Yoshinori Kitase — Final Fantasy VII Remake’s director — noted back on June 14th, 2019, that this game isn’t a “straight 1:1 copy or a simple remaster of the original game,” and each game (or part) in the project will have a volume of content compared to a “standalone Final Fantasy title.” Also, the first part of the game is set to be on two Blu-ray discs:

“Our goal with this project is to rebuild FINAL FANTASY VII for a new era. We’re not making a straight 1:1 copy or a simple remaster of the original game.

It’s a huge volume of work and data to re-imagine this world. Each game in the project will have a volume of content comparable to a standalone FINAL FANTASY. The disc version of the first game is actually a 2 Blu-Ray Disc set. This approach allows us to remake the original without having to scale back on everything players loved.”

It’s unclear if part two of Final Fantasy VII Remake will be on two discs, but what is for certain about the second part is that during a financial results briefing this month, Matsuda was asked if the delayed Final Fantasy VII Remake will “impact development or launch timelines for the follow-up game.”

Thanks to publication site videogameschronicle.com we learn that Matsuda had said: “No, it will not.”

The website says that work on the second installment will be made easier after the first game releases to the wild. On that note, the site pulled up Kitase saying just that back during E3 2019:

“While the development team finish the first game in the project, we are continuing to plan and outline the overall volume of content for the second.

Due to the work already done on the first game we anticipate development of the second game to be more efficient. We have our own internal schedule and plan, but for now we’d like to focus our information on the first game in the project.”

Finally, the forthcoming remake will launch for PS4 on April 10th, 2020, while either the PC or Xbox One version will debut sometime around April 10th, 2021, which marks the end of the game’s PS4 timed exclusivity.
