Many console games run at 30fps and can dip below 25fps depending on the title that you’re playing. Some titles, though, on the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro can reach 60fps (although certain games can’t maintain said frames), but it looks like Polyphony Digital CEO and Gran Turismo producer Kazunori Yamauchi aren’t looking to maintain the console standard of 30fps, and he’s more concerned about maintaining frames reaching 120-240fps.
Folks familiar with PCs will know that that market has left 30fps behind a while ago. However, current-gen consoles usually hit the market running either at 30fps or 60fps — and that’s not counting frame-instability.
Nevertheless, the new console pitch that you’ll likely hear at E3 or Gamescom is “4K resolution running at 60fps,” but it looks like Polyphony Digital CEO and Gran Turismo producer Yamauchi isn’t worried about resolution so long as the games he’s backing runs at higher and stable frames.
We know this thanks to website gamingbolt.com, in which the site covers Yamauchi saying that 4K resolution is enough, but there’s room for improvement on the frame rate spectrum.
With that said, you can read what has Yamauchi’s interest piqued when it comes to resolution and achieving “better” spatial resolution as noted below:
“Rather than a spatial resolution that you’re talking about, I’m more interested in the advancements we can make in terms of the time resolution. In terms of frames per second, rather than staying at 60 fps, I’m more interested in raising it to 120 FPS or even 240 FPS. I think that’s what’s going to be changing the experience from here on forward.”
In other words, when next-gen consoles pop up, which we’ll be the PS5 and Xbox Series X sometime in Q4 2020, we’ll likely see the former platform hit store shelves with a new Gran Turismo game boasting frames higher than 60fps according to Yamauchi.
With that said, do you think we’ll see higher frame rates running at a stable pace next-gen, or do you think Yamauchi is just running his mouth?
