Back on February 3rd, 2020, PlatinumGames started a Kickstarter campaign for the 2013 Wii U game The Wonderful 101, which goes by the name The Wonderful 101: Remastered. According to both PlatinumGames head Atsushi Inaba and company director Hideki Kamiya, the two would like to make a sequel if enough fan interest is shown in the forthcoming remaster.
After PlatinumGames partnered up with Tencent and then started a Kickstarter campaign for a new version of The Wonderful 101, many fans came forth to show their displeasure.
Nevertheless, it seems that there are more people out there that want to see PlatinumGames succeed given that The Wonderful 101: Remastered has surpassed its pledge goal of $49,411, which currently sits at $1,630,935.
On the topic of success, website nintendoeverything.com had the chance to sit down with Inaba and Kamiya to talk making a sequel to The Wonderful 101.
Here’s what Kamiya told the publication site in an interview before the Kickstarter campaign went live regarding The Wonderful 101 sequel:
“Back when we were making the Wii U original, I had a lot of hopes for the game before its release. I knew we made a really incredible game, so I felt confident that a lot of people would play it and it’d be a big hit. I was dreaming things up left and right – I had ideas like, ‘Oh, what would it be like if we did a sequel where Wonder Blue was the leader?’ All of these creative and exciting ideas were flowing, and then the game released and I saw the numbers and was like, ‘Wait, what?!’ (Laughs) So, I hope I get to have those aspirations again in the future.”
Inaba chimed in, too, and added on to what Kamiya had to say to the site. Here’s what the head of PlatinumGames had to say about a sequel to the colorful 2013 game:
“We always think about how we can expand on all our games. We want to revisit it now because we’ve always felt it was a high-quality game that didn’t get a fair chance. In regards to a sequel or something, we can’t make one if there aren’t any fans for the series in the first place. So if fans support this and things go really well for The Wonderful 101, then I’d say it’s pretty natural that we’d want to make another game in the series! (Laughs)”
Whether you like PlatinumGames or not after the whole Tencent partnership and Kickstarter campaign for The Wonderful 101: Remastered, know that the likes of a sequel to said game will likely happen given the amount of attention the ongoing Kickstarter run has garnered.
Right now, the PC, PS4, and Switch funding goals have been met. And lastly, you can learn more about The Wonderful 101: Remastered by hitting up its official Kickstarter page.
