Kickstarter decided to get woke and gatekeep projects. Now they’re going broke. The company announced that they’re laying off 45% of their staff shortly after unionizing.
TheGamer covered the news and posted a quote from Kickstarter’s senior communications manager, David Gallagher, who tried to blame the downturn in revenue on Mistress Corona-chan…
“[…] while people are continuing to support live projects on Kickstarter as normal, the COVID crisis has led to a 35% drop in live projects from a year ago.”
Anyone who has been paying attention to the news knows that the coronavirus only really began hitting the economy in March after most world leaders – save for Taiwan – ignored Corona-chan’s deadly kiss throughout January and February.
So how did two months of lockdown disrupt Kickstarter so much that they saw a 35% drop? Are they saying that 35% of all their revenue in 2019 came from March and April?
Anyway, even Clownfish TV called them out on this, noting that blaming the coronavirus was a weak excuse from the company.
For those of you who don’t remember, Kickstarter virtue signaled how woke they were with a public statement they issued back on October 2nd, 2019.
Essentially they announced that they would no longer be accepting projects that “discriminated” against certain groups and would be axing any campaigns that contained discrimination, subjugation, or intolerance.
This included Kickstarter’s Trust & Safety Team banning Mike S. Miller’s Lonestar comic because they claimed it “discriminated” against the violent gang MS-13.
TheQuartering did a video about Kickstarter getting woke back in October of 2019.
Basically Kickstarter is entering into that phase where creators are pulling out or they’re banning potential projects that could have netted them a hefty revenue bump. In result of this, they now have to downsize and layoff staff.
It’s a classic Get Woke, Go Broke scenario.
It won’t be long now before either Kickstarter restructures, gets rid of their restrictive policies, or they end up on the Get Woke, Go Broke Master List.
