Nioh 2 Major Update
Sequels of great games always suffer the burden of having to fill the immense shoes of their predecessors. The more beloved the original, the harder it is for the sequel to live up to the hype and expectations that will proceed it. Nioh 2 made a valiant attempt, improving on the diversity of combat, refining mechanics, even implementing a player based NPC system to keep the experience functional, whether players picked it up at launch or a year after when most of the community had departed.
Sadly where the original was a tightly honed, albeit flawed, experience grossing 3 million since launch, the sequel had a significantly rougher start. Not a bad game, but one that would have significantly benefited from a few extra months of polishing and balancing. Both of which each update has seen in spades.
Even still, Nioh 2 has now successfully sold (not shipped) over 1 million copies. In celebration, Team Ninja has unveiled a massive update that will precede the release of the game’s upcoming expansion. Included with their gratitude towards the community will be a new set of armor, new missions, a new guardian, photo mode, and yes, further quality of life improvements for the game.

Creative Director Tom Lee offered further details on the upcoming content. The photo mode, described as simple, will feature a robust set of options including image exposure, gradation, lighting & ting adjustments, along with a variety of “dramatic filters.”
Nine new side missions with Twilight versions will be added based designed with the feedback from the community. Feedback that Lee stressed Team Ninja are both grateful for and have paid vigorously close attention to.
Specifics on the new armor, guardian spirit, or what quality of life improvements was not provided. As the rest of the post dedicated itself to hyping players for the first of three expansions. Titled “The Tengu’s Disciple,” it will see players embroidered in another conflict. Wielding a new weapon whose only descriptor is possessing the ability to alter the performance of skills outside set stances.
A great battle has taken place at Yashima in the late Heian period. As a visitor in Yashima, our protagonist finds a shrine possessing a mysterious whistle called the Sohayamaru. Upon inspection, the whistle shines radiantly as the shadow of Yokai can be seen lurking in the background. It is revealed that whenever wars take place, heroes wielding the Sohayamaru will head into battle in order to restore peace back into this land.
Whether the expansion is “sizable & badass” will be seen on July 30th.
