Madden NFL 21 will gain a new update courtesy of EA — who is on the Traitors of America list — that will change the Washington Redskin’s team name and logo to something “generic” due to the symbolism of the “Redskins” being “controversial.” An Electronic Arts spokesperson recently sent out a letter acknowledging that the changes will go beyond graphical updates.

As per website usgamer.net, the outlet received word from an actual EA spokesperson on the changes that are underway for the Redskins being turned into a generic team until the real-life team takes up a new name and logo.

Here’s the response that the website received from said spokesperson:

“We are pleased to see Washington’s decision to change their team name and visual identity. We are quickly working to update Madden NFL 21 to feature a generic Washington team, while we await final word on the updated team name and logo design.”

The website elaborates on the changes that are being made for Madden NFL 21 in that names and logos aren’t the only things that will be changed. Voice commentary will be pulled and replaced with new phrases and references, and crowd signs will be changed too. Also, other things making obvious or subtle references to the Redskins will be altered:

“The update will have to be downloaded via title updates that will download automatically, and they’re not just cosmetic. Electronic Arts says the update will include audio and commentary updates, motion graphics and presentation, stadium art, environments, crowd gear and signage, and uniforms.”

Moreover, the spokesperson also told the publication site that EA is committed to removing any mentions or visuals of the Redskins from the game:

“The statement does say that players may “continue to see some outdated Washington references in other areas of the game at launch,” but EA says it is committed to removing all of those from the game in additional title updates after launch. The company also states that the game is in the final stages of preparation before shipping, so those who purchase a physical disc will need to connect online to see the Washington changes in-game.”

For those of you unaware, Madden NFL 21 is set to debut this year on August 28th across PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Lastly, it is said that the forthcoming sports game will also gain next-gen support (PS5 and Xbox Series X) sometime later this year.
