No PS5 Pre-Orders Anytime Soon, According to Sony Marketing Head

Everyone is waiting for the big reveal on how much the next generation consoles are going to cost. Both manufacturers have, in spite of constant rumors of imminent announcements, stubbornly refused to reveal when they will reveal the price tag of their new hardware. All that is known is both next-generation consoles will feature two versions: A digital-only and a traditional console.

A rumor circulating some social media circles caused eager consumers to begin lining up outside stores to secure their console for launch. As Sony has announced a limited production for the first year of the PS5’s life, this isn’t as nonsensical as it may seem. However, many will likely just pre-order online and avoid the hassle of lines.

Like a record on repeat, the rumors ended up being false, leaving many disappointed and curious as to when Sony or even Microsoft would announce how much the consoles cost.

Talking with Geoff Keighley, Head of Marketing Eric Lempel confirmed the rumor did not originate from Sony or anyone affiliated with the company. Refusing to give a specific date for the official announcement, he pledged Sony would not suddenly drop the price tag out of the blue, leaving people unprepared.

At this point, I’m fully convinced either company’s strategy is to wait out the other as long as possible to undercut or match their competitor’s price point. A dangerous gambit for Sony to be making. If Microsoft has a hit conference on the 22nd, during which they announce the price, matching the price will be humiliating for the company.

Microsoft is reported to have the advantage on pricing going into the next generation. Owing entirely to the company owning their manufacturing, whereas Sony had to compete with other companies for parts, driving up their costs.

With the Holiday launch fast approaching, it is unlikely our wait will be much longer.
