Playstack London and Cold Symmetry have finally revealed the official release date for the Soulsborne clone, Mortal Shell as August 18th, 2020. The release date was revealed with a sparkling and heavy new trailer featuring lots of hacking, slashing, and cumbersome clobbering.
The game was originally announced back on April 1st, 2020, leading a lot of people to believe that it was some kind of April Fool’s joke. However, Cold Symmetry and Playstack’s third-person hack-and-slash title is anything but a joke. The team has been working on the title for some time and now they’ve revealed that it’s releasing this month.
The game looks very much like Dark Souls on steroids. Visually it’s so much more impressive than From’s title, but mechanically it appears to be about the same… with the exception of some new ranged weaponry that looked like crude contraptions that somehow escaped from Capcom’s Monster Hunter series. You can check out the trailer below.
Cold Symmetry’s title will be a timed exclusive for the PlayStation 4. The game won’t appear on the PC or Xbox One until 2021.
The Steam page notes that the game isn’t scheduled to release until next year. So Sony obviously pulled an Epic and decided to garner some of the sweet, sweet exclusivity for themselves.
As far as the gameplay is concerned, the combat is slow and plodding, just like the Dark Souls titles. There appears to be a little more kick and spiff when it comes to the animations, giving gamers more of a dynamic feedback for the combat. The ability to enter into the stone form to increase damage or absorb enemy attacks also adds an extra layer of strategy to the game.
It’s a shame that PC gamers will have to wait an entire year before getting their hands on the title. It’s still possible to wishlist it over on the Steam page, though.
