GOG Galaxy 1.2 Arrives With Cloud Saves, Customizable Client

GOG announced that GOG Galaxy, the download and software client for the GOG.com store and user library, has been updated to 1.2. The update is available right now for those opted into the GOG Galaxy beta test and can preview the updates right now. For those who have opted into the beta test, you’ll be able to take GOG Galaxy 1.2 for spin starting April when the client officially graduates from beta testing.

Piotr Karwowski, managing director at GOG.com, explained why they decided to embrace cloud saves for GOG Galaxy and what they hope to achieve with the update, saying in the press release…

“Losing your save files can be really frustrating. And a big part of gaming legacy, including many of the greatest games, was missing cloud saves – until now.”

“Thanks to the Universal Cloud Saves feature of GOG Galaxy, not only new games, but also the all-time classics and titles which development has been finished years ago, will be upgraded with saves syncing and cloud backup.”

This now brings GOG Galaxy up to par with other online digital distribution clients and user services, such as Steam and Uplay, both of which also offer cloud saving for easy access to your saved games no matter what device you’re playing on or where in the world you’re accessing your account from.

They’ve also introduced a hibernation mode to cut down on CPU usage, along with options for bandwidth throttling when downloading, an FPS counter, in-game screenshot capturing and the new GOG Galaxy overlay and notification system.

GOG Galaxy is now very much a legitimate competitor to Steam, and this is only good news for PC gamers. More options, more variety and more customization means that gamers have more ways to game, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

You can opt into the beta right now to get your hands on GOG Galaxy version 1.2, or you can wait until April and download the finished client when it’s available free for the public.
