Death Stranding Won’t Be At E3 This Year

Hideo Kojima dropped some unfortunate news for gamers looking forward to seeing Death Stranding at this year’s E3. The game may be forfeiting an appearance but Hideo Kojima is supposedly going to be in attendance at the E3 Coliseum with Geoff Keighley.

The news came courtesy of a tweet from Hideo Kojima, who posted the following message for fans.

This isn’t too surprising. Death Stranding is still heavy in development and the only thing they managed to finish last year were a few cinematics involving Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen and Guillermo Del Toro.

Kojima revealed last year that they were still heavy in development of the game, and they were working with Guerrilla Games with the Decima Engine in order to build Death Stranding. They still had to gut some of the engine in order to convert it to fit the more realistic aesthetic for Kojima’s title. Originally the Decima Engine was used for Horizon: Zero Dawn, which was praised for its lighting and environments, but it was pretty obvious in the Death Stranding in-engine cinematics that the game was utilizing the engine’s lighting capabilities in a far different way than how Guerrilla Games used it for Horizon.

So what will Kojima be doing with Geoff at the E3 Coliseum? Well, we won’t know until next week. I can only imagine that it will be an hour or so of discussion about what they’re working on with the game, but you won’t be seeing any actual gameplay footage.

So far Death Stranding has been described as a mix of games like The Division and Uncharted 4 as a third-person adventure-action game of sorts. We still have no idea what you actually do, but most people are expecting an over-the-shoulder shooter.

Hopefully we’ll get to see some actual gameplay at the Tokyo Game Show later this year in September.
