According to a new blog that Bungie posted, Destiny 2 is currently undergoing a new naming process that will see the sequel to the first Destiny go by the moniker of “Destiny 2: New Light.” Additionally, the first-person looter shooter will be a free-to-play game, forgoing PS4 exclusive content, opting for cross-save, and moving from Battle.net on PC to Steam.

On September 17th, 2019, the base game will go “free-to-play” and include all year one content, including foundational modes, and rewards accompanied by the “Shadowkeep” DLC.
In other words, the core game will stay free, but additional content will be made available in the form of separately paid purchases.
Exclusive platform content will no longer be a thing. Additionally, Cross-save will come to Xbox One, PC, and Stadia. However, there are no plans for PS4 cross-save support as of now.
No given date has surfaced, but one day Destiny 2 will move from Battle.net to Steam on PC where existing players will be able to transfer all characters and goods over to the Steam client once the initiative goes live.
If you don’t know, Destiny 2‘s content release structure has changed from year one where the game releases paid expansions every year. After buying a given expansion, you’ll have access to all features available in the DLC, which content is released in “seasons” four times in that given year.
Year three of Destiny: New Light (set for this year’s September) is the upcoming expansion known as “Shadowkeep.” For clarity, the “free-to-play” move will not grant open access to all new content, and there will still be a paywall in some instances — the base game and other select content will be free.
