Todd Howard Says Fallout 76 Isn’t Really Like Rust, DayZ Or Other “Survival” Games

Fallout 76 has garnered mixed reactions from gamers and fans of Bethesda. Before the game’s announcement, some rumors popped up saying that it will be like Rust or DayZ. As of recent, Todd Howard has come forth to speak on the “survival” comparisons (regarding games like Rust and DayZ) and believes those claims aren’t accurate to what Bethesda Game Studios is currently developing.

According to an interview that PC Gamer picked up regarding Todd Howard, we learn why Howard and Bethesda avoid using the word “survival” when describing Fallout 76.

In addition to the above, this is done because “people’s minds immediately go to DayZ and Rust,” and Howard feels those comparisons are not really accurate for what the team is currently doing with Fallout 76:

“We avoid the word ‘survival’, because people’s minds immediately go to DayZ and Rust and certain other games, and those comparisons are not really accurate for what we’re doing. If you think about the survival modes we’ve made in Fallout 4, it has that vibe… Fallout 76, although it’s an online game, when I play it, I mostly still play it solo. We like those experiences as much as our fans do.”

Later in the interview, he explains that Fallout 76 will incorporate various features to keep the game balanced to prevent instances where a higher level person can run up to a level-1 (or beginner) and kill them instantly and steal all their stuff. His response to the above reads:

“That’s not fun. Well, it’s fun for whoever killed you, but not for you… Death is already bad enough in a game, because you’re losing time, that we didn’t feel we needed to add any further penalty. We wanted to make sure you don’t lose your progression.”

As it stands now, if you wish to test the game early, the mysterious beta with no due date can be accessed if you pre-order the game. Lastly, you can look for the actual game to land late this year on November 14th for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
