Planetside 3 Planned To Have Full Galactic Warfare, Planetary Colonization

Daybreak Studios recently suffered layoffs, as noted by Gamasutra. The company supposedly is splitting off into separate teams working on Planetside projects, one of which will supposedly be Planetside 3.

The news comes courtesy of a post over on the Planetside 2 website, where executive producer, Andy Sites, revealed that Planetside Arena would be a stepping stone of features and content for Planetside 3.

It sounds like the game could be a war-centric version of No Man’s Sky if they get their way, with Sites writing…

“Over those 16+ years, we have amassed millions of passionate fans. So when we think about what the PlanetSide 3 experience needs to be, we know that there are incredibly high expectations from all of you. PlanetSide Arena is intended to be the stepping stone to PlanetSide 3, which we envision expanding from the current battlefields of Auraxis, to full-fledged galactic war with empires exploring, colonizing and conquering one another within an expansive galaxy. We envision PlanetSide Arena as a way to allow us to link present day PlanetSide 2 and PlanetSide 3 story lines, as well as providing an opportunity to try out new features, styles of play, etc.”

Don’t expect Planetside 3 to arrive anytime soon, though.

They’re still working on Planetside Arena and the game still has to make it through the Early Access phase and then they have to make sure it’s feature complete before they can start serious work on Planetside 3.

At the moment, Planetside Arena isn’t scheduled to graduate from Early Access until the second quarter of 2020. While the base game is free-to-play over on the Steam store, there’s a premium version called the “Recruit Edition” for $19.99.

Unfortunately for Daybreak, the Battle Royale-esque Planetside Arena is littered with microtransactions and the game currently has a mixed rating.

Daybreak tried to cash-in on the Battle Royale popularity with Planetside Arena to bolster the appeal of the brand and make enough cash to start work on Planetside 3.

The third entry in the series sounds like it could be ambitious, but with Daybreak suffering layoffs, and Planetside Arena wallowing in mixed-rating territory, the future of the brand doesn’t look… secure.

We know that Daybreak has the capabilities to bring something like Planetside 3 to life, but company stability seems to be a completely different story.
