I’m not sure why it hasn’t been done before in other horror games, but it appears as if developer Red Barrels will be taking the horror series, Outlast, to the deep south for the next outing. The teaser trailer for the new game is steeped in horror-themed religion and the things that go bump in the night.

DSO Gaming spotted the new trailer, referencing that earlier in the month the developers teased that the game was on the way. You can check out the Outlast 2 teaser below.

The developers lay out a very basic premise for the game, citing how “divine inspiration” can sometimes be used to justify the most horrific acts committed by man…

“No conflict is ever black and white. But once the dust has settled, the victors get to decide who was right and who was wrong. Who is good and who is evil. Human nature pushes us to extremes of violence and depravity, which we then justify by divine inspiration and a promise of paradise to come. Horror rises from desperation and blind faith. OUTLAST 2 will test your faith, pushing players to a place where going mad is the only sane thing to do.”

That’s a big departure from the mad-house asylum journey that players were taken on in the first game and its expansion pack.

It’s nice that developers are starting to delve into different territory for their horror inspiration. It seems like a lot of games have become stuck in a rut when it comes to getting creative about horror games.

While I love the dark sci-fi themes that are covered and explored in some games, it seems as if we’ve had a deluge of sci-fi walking simulators imitating Alien: Isolation and other games of a similar ilk. That’s not to say that the horror sci-fi themes are bad, just that we’ve had a lot of them lately, so it’s nice to see Outlast 2 taking a different approach to the genre.

You can look for the game to go live in fall of 2016. Given that Outlast was on the Xbox One and PS4 after originally releasing on PC, don’t be surprised if the sequel is a multiplatform release.
