River City Ransom SP Announced For Nintendo 3DS

As part of the 30th anniversary for Kunio-Kun, Technos and Arc System Works have announced a new River City Ransom SP game for the Nintendo 3DS.

The title is a throwback to the old 8-bit games on the NES and Gameboy, where the chibi-sized fighters run around the city beating the living daylights out of anyone who gets in their way.

All Games Beta spotted the newest trailer for the game over on the official Arc System Works YouTube channel, and you can check out the debut trailer for River City Ransom SP below.

The game features Kunio and Riki in eight-direction beat-’em-up action, typical of the old NES and SNES games.

The standard fighting and city exploration still seems to be present, but it doesn’t appear as if any of the more advanced features from the later games will make the cut.

It’s a real shame because the last Nekketsu title on the SNES was one of the best brawlers available on the system. Since then the titles have mostly veered back to the older games before Shodai, where Kunio and Riki had a limited move set and went around busting up heads and kicking down rival gang members.

On the plus side, at least this isn’t another remake of the NES Super Dodgeball games. I guess it doesn’t matter anyway because it’s unlikely that this will get a release in the West, unless hardcore fans beg Arc System Works for it.

If you’re up for some side-scrolling brawling action centered around two of the originators of the beat-’em-up genre, you can look for River City Ransom SP to launch on the Nintendo 3DS starting April 28th, 2016. There’s also a special edition soundtrack that will also be included in the package. The game appears to be set for release only in Japan but you can likely keep an eye on it via importers like Play-Asia.
