Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones is a supernatural horror roleplaying game, developed by Cultic Games. If you are familiar with H.P. Lovecraft’s work, “The Old Ones” should be a dead giveaway that this game is based off of his lore and spooky stories.
H.P. Lovecraft is a bit famous in the world of occult fanatics, for his strange and twisted style of horror and unique creatures that he wrote about; and the use of magic that could rip apart a person’s sanity. For those of you not familiar with his work, he is the man that started the Cthulhu lore and the stories behind the Old Ones.
You have probably seen a Cthulhu creature at some point or the other, and if you haven’t, the best description is a strange alien creature with a series of tentacles coming out of its mouth. A bit like Davy Jones from Disney’s summer hit, Pirates of The Caribbean. Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones
will be following this lore and world that H.P. Lovecraft created, and will allow you to explore and fight in a point-and-click style adventure RPG.
The story takes place in a 1920-ish time period in the city of Arkham (no, not the Batman one!), after reality has been ripped apart and the city was sucked into a black dimensional abyss. You will have multiple choice dialogue options — options that will change and adjust based on the mental state of the characters, and some really unique game concepts that delve into mental health to incorporate it into the gameplay.
For example, using black magic is extremely powerful, but it will also deteriorate your character’s mental health. Different characters will be able to recover their mental health in different ways, some through faith and the belief in God, others through rational thinking and research. Dive too far in using black magic and you could risk losing your mind, health, or even that character’s soul. Combat will be turn-based and tactical, so you will be able to plan out your movements and actions instead of always just relying on magic and brute force.
Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones will have seven different character archetypes for you to choose from, each with their own prologue and skill specialties. As for the art, Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones is in a hand drawn 2D world, filled with ominous dark creatures. The developers released a gameplay trailer, so you can check that out down below.
