The headline probably seems confusing to a lot of people, but that’s the best way to sum up this indie title from Wave Interactive that’s currently seeking funds on Kickstarter. The name of the game is called Buck, and it features a confused and angry dog looking for answers in a desperate world gone mad.
The visuals and themes scream Full Throttle, but the gameplay is closer to the likes of Klei Entertainemnt’s Shank series. What makes it different from Klei’s grindhouse game is that it’s layered on top of a noir, character-driven story about discovery, regret and a side-order of vengeance.
The gameplay trailer sets up Buck quite nicely, giving gamers a cool look at the visual effects and cinematics for the title. It reminds me a lot of Dust: An Elysian Tail.
The art instantly won me over, but what also got me was the customization, scavenging and item crafting. Being able to modify the guns and craft more powerful weapons seems pretty cool.
The traveling around and being able to interact with NPCs also reminds me a little bit of the old Sega Genesis title Outlander.

Wave Interactive writes passionately about the on the Kickstarter page, explaining that they’ve already put plenty of work into the project over the past three years…
“It’s hard to describe the immense impact that Buck has had on our lives. We’ve been working on the game for over three years now, spending thousands of dollars from our own pockets to get the game up to its current pre-alpha status. You can try the current build for Buck to see for yourself how our passion for this project has taken us this far and how, with your support, we can make Buck the best game it can be. “
The game definitely comes across as a passion project. The art-style still has me floored. I love that airbrushed noir look they have going on. It gives Buck a striking, definitive look that stands apart from most other titles on the market or coming to the market.
The game has a fairly small target for its Kickstarter goal. Wave Interactive is only seeking $30,000 to help bring Buck to life. If you like the post-apocalyptic, sort of Mad Max meets Sam & Max with a dash of Full Throttle, be sure to check out the Kickstarter page for more info.
