Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age Coming To PS4 In 2017

Tired of HD re-releases? Well, you probably have no interest in this latest bit of news. However, for everyone who enjoys having a PS4 so they can re-buy PS2 games for $60 with an extra coat of HD resolution and smoother frame-rates, you’ll enjoy knowing that Square Enix has teamed with Sony once more to re-release Final Fantasy XII in HD, for the PS4.

Over on the PlayStation Blog there’s a post from Square Enix producer Hiroaki Kato explaining that Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age is coming in 2017 to North America and Europe.

The reason for the slight name annexation is because the Zodiac Age will feature content that wasn’t originally included in the Western version of the release that appeared in the game a decade ago when it launched in 2006 for the PS2.

Some of that content includes an improved interface and the Zodiac job system and Trial Mode, both of which will be making their way into the Western release of the game for the first time on the PS4.

The news was accompanied by a trailer to showcase the HD graphics for Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, which you can check out below.

I almost forgot just how good the art direction was on Final Fantasy XII. Even to this day I really love the sort of washed out color tone they used for the palette, giving the game a hint of a water color palette. The models were also done quite well, looking very similar to the way a lot of the character concept art oftentimes look for Final Fantasy games. Hideo Minaba and Isamu Kamikokuryō’s designs still stand out to this day, even though they were held back in quality by the PS2’s hardware limitation.

Also, listening to Nobuo Uematsu’s original Final Fantasy prelude never gets tiring. It’s really one of the most iconic songs in all of gaming. It’s such a shame it’s whored out in the way that it is so often by Square Enix.

But speaking of soundtracks… Square has gone back to completely re-score the background audio for Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age using today’s high-end production techniques. They still leave the option available for gamers to switch back to the old PS2 OST, but it’s pretty cool that they’re upgrading the score.

In addition to the score and graphics getting a facelift (or would it be an auricular lift for the sound?) the game will also include standard PS4 functionality, such as the Share functionality, Trophy support, auto-saves, cloud saves and reduced load times.

And while the trailer was afraid to show off much of Fran in the game (since she’s not liked very much by today’s third-wave feminists), you’ll be able to see the bunny-eared vixen in action all to your heart’s content, as much as you want, when the game launches on the PS4 in 2017.
