Horizon: Zero Dawn Delayed To February 28th, 2017

Guerrilla Games unleashed some devastating news to any and everyone who has been waiting on Horizon: Zero Dawn for the PS4. The game has been delayed by an entire year; pushed all the way back into early 2017… February 28th, to be exact.

The news comes courtesy of Guerrilla Games’ managing director Hermen Hulst, who dropped by the PlayStation Blog to ease the news about the delay with a brand new trailer that focuses on the lead character, Aloy. You can check out the trailer below.

Suffice it to say, Horizon was probably one of the only few AAA games I was looking forward to this year. It seemed as if it was at least trying something new, especially with the robo-dinos.

I did have worries about the end game, though. Like, beyond hunting robo-dinos and upgrading your equipment, what’s the other challenges in the game? Part of me fears as if the hook is the dino-hunting and everything beyond that might be a little paper thin. Hopefully the delay and the focus on the polish will prove me to be exceptionally wrong.

According to Hulst, they actually want to spend that year’s worth of time to improve the game, both graphically and mechanically…

“[…] we know many of you have been anxious to play the game since we first announced it. However, we also want to ensure that Horizon Zero Dawn lives up to the visuals and gameplay quality that our games are known for. The new date affords us the extra time required to deliver fully on our ambitious vision for Horizon Zero Dawn.”

There appears to be a strong narrative behind the game, but I hope this isn’t one of those games where the gameplay is put on the back burner and only used as a stepping stone to unfold Aloy’s tale. Too often the AAA sector has fed us titles where you play through them once and then never want to play through them again.

No Man’s Sky seems to be the complete opposite of how a lot of AAA titles are built these days, with a strong focus on exploration, gameplay and replayability. I really hope Guerrilla nails it with Horizon so that we get something closer to the likes of No Man’s Sky when it comes to replay, as opposed to something like Homefront: The Revolution, The Order 1886 or Assassin’s Creed, where you play through the games and then promptly forget them.

We’ll likely find out more about the game at this year’s E3, leading up to the long wait for the February 28th, 2017 release on the PS4.
