Hailed as the first game of its kind, Jujubee’s Kursk is a dynamic recreation of the of the submarine that sank to the bottom of the Barents Sea on August 12th, 2000. All 118 crew members died and the reasons for it sinking are still unknown. Players, however, will get to investigate the sub on the doomed voyage, reliving the tragic moments in a photorealistic environment.
For the first time since its announcement, Kursk will be playable in some capacity at GamesCom this year in Cologne, Germany.
Michał Stępień, the CEO of Jujubee, commented about the game’s reliance on the facts and the focus on the realism of the journey that saw 118 people lose their lives, stating in the press release…
“This is the first time we will ever show actual materials from the game. No one before had a chance to see the game in motion, and not even a single screenshot or footage was ever published.
“After the teaser, which was released in 2015, the Gamescom showcase will be the first opportunity to check out the actual gameplay, visuals, and sounds from KURSK. “
The developers will have a playable demo on hand at this year’s event. Giving gamers and journalists alike a first-hand look at the interactive voyage deep beneath the sea.
Kursk is being labeled as an adventure-documentary, so it will be interesting to see what sort of gameplay elements are present, if any are present at all. It could end up being a walking simulator, not that there’s anything wrong with that. There’s plenty of room on the market for edutainment.
The environments in the game are meticulously designed, almost but not quite photorealistic. Even still, if you have a penchant for realistic games based on real-life historical events, this seems like a fairly cool project.
It’s always nice to see video games being used in a way to help recount history in ways that can’t be replicated by pictures or film.
Based on some of the images of Kursk, it seems like it would make for a great VR experience. The sub being on fire looks pretty dynamic and I’m curious how the game will end? Other than sinking to the bottom of the sea… of course.
You can look for more information to surface for Kursk when it arrives for demonstration at this year’s GamesCom event. Additionally, feel free to keep abreast of news for the game by checking in on the official Jujubee website.
