No Man’s Sky Won’t Need PS Plus For Multiplayer

While Hello Games continues to tout the infinitesimal likelihood of ever meeting another human being in No Man’s Sky, they do acknowledge that a large part of the game’s discovery and growth will depend on multiplayer. Lucky for PlayStation 4 gamers, the usually mandated requirement of needing PlayStation Plus to dabble in the multiplayer aspects of most games won’t be required for No Man’s Sky.

According to Game Informer, No Man’s Sky multiplayer can be played without a PlayStation Plus subscription. According to a Sony representative…

“PS Plus won’t be a requirement to play online, however you will need to connected to the internet for your discoveries to register with the universal atlas,”

The universal atlas is like the mega-monolith database that will contain all of the discoveries, names, planets and solar systems that players encounter throughout their journey toward the center of the universe in No Man’s Sky. Game Informer likens it to a online leaderboard system. I’d like to think of it as the universal checklist for reminding you how much of a piece of dust you are in the grand scheme of things.

Nevertheless, No Man’s Sky is expected to be a big seller this August when it drops in a couple of weeks on the 9th for both the PS4 and PC. As also noted by Game Informer, they’re labeling the title as a single-player game given that Hello Games and Sony aren’t very confident in many people meeting with each other throughout their journeys.

If you need a short refresher on the game (or perhaps you’ve been living under a very solid rock with a poor Wi-Fi connection) you can check out the Fight trailer below to give you a sampling of what’s to come in a couple of weeks.

After several years of development, lots of roadblocks and more hype than a grand finals showdown between Daigo and Justin Wong, you can expect to see No Man’s Sky on store shelves and digital distribution storefronts including Steam and the PlayStation Store starting August 9th for $59.99.
