The first full story trailer for DC’s Wonder Woman has gone live, featuring a look at some of the characters, the World War I set pieces and the demi-goddess in action against soldiers on the front line.
The trailer clocks in at nearly three whole minutes, covering a lot of the story elements surrounding one of the prime members of the Justice League. The trailer starts off using Chris Pine’s character, a pilot during World War I, as a catalyst to help usher viewers into Diana’s mythical world after he crashes onto the beach and gets rescued by the Greek goddess. She eventually leaves her home to go back with Steve the pilot, finding herself being introduced to a lot of the things that make human society what it is… including secretaries.

The visual tone of the film looks pretty good. The cinematography is gorgeous in some scenes and the tonal use of the colors – mixing the drab greens and grays with small splashes of green, blue and red – help keep the film looking serious and visually striking all at the same time.
If there’s one thing I have to give to the DC universe, it’s that each of the directors have managed to capture a very visually definitive and distinct tone from their Marvel rivals. I just wish the writing was as engaging as the cinematography.
Speaking of writing… the dialogue all seems fairly passe. Nothing seems particularly striking from the trailer, but I did like Chris Pine’s subdued performance, based on what was showcased in the trailer. I’m glad he didn’t come across as loud and obnoxious or overbearing and disgustingly charming. The last thing the film needs is to reek of being a romantic comedy.
The action sequences look okay. I still don’t think Gal Gadot carries the kind of stature or gait that instills fear or the presence of an indomitable warrior. When you compare her to the way Jaimie Alexander carries herself as Lady Sif, there’s a very distinct differences between the two… with Alexander seeming more combat intensive compared to Gadot.
Still, the shots of Wonder Woman ricocheting the mortar shell off her shield looked sweet. The bullets bouncing off her armor was also pretty cool. It kind of feels like a World War I version of Captain America: The First Avenger, just a little less goofy and slightly more focused. If the trailer is anything to go by, it looks like it could be better than the first Captain America movie. Then again, DC has a tendency of pumping out awesome trailers for purely mediocre films.
We’ll see if Wonder Woman can overcome DC’s drought of finding a critical and blockbuster success that isn’t Nolan’s Batman trilogy. The film is due for release in the summer of 2017.
