I’m sure a lot of gamers are tired of certain buzzword-genres being thrown around whenever a crowd-funding venture pops up. “Rogue-like”, “Procedural generation”, “Open-world”, “massive multiplayer”, “Steampunk” and “JRPG” are common phrases that appear whenever discussions about crowd-funding appear, but Neko Works don’t seem to be concerned with the over-saturation of poorly made games flooding the market at the moment sporting the “JRPG” genre tag. They’re attacking the buzzword head-on by actually focusing on making a traditional, honest-to-gaming Japanese role-playing title that appears to be a mix of what Final Fantasy VII was on the N64 and Square’s recent World of Final Fantasy.

The company announced that their Kickstarter has gone live for the game Light Fairytale, which is a 3D JRPG set in a dying underground dieselpunk city.

The first five minutes of the game were released way back at the end of May, which you can check out below.

The game really does seem like a throwback to the old PSX JRPGs of old. The pudgy little chibi characters in the overworld with more mature looking characters used for the dialogue art is like classic Squaresoft.

Following the first five minutes of gameplay, they also released a revised version of the combat system they plan on using. You can check out four minutes of the turned-based combat with the video below.

The game has been on Steam Greenlight for nearly 10 days as of the writing of this article. It’s garnered more than 1,400 votes and continues to pave a way slowly towards acceptance onto the Steam store. Featuring a journey beyond the underground city, an adventure into the great unknown, and thematic elements based on Final Fantasy VII and Breath of Fire V, Neko Works is hoping to rekindle some of the lost magic from the JRPG genre with their 2017 release of Light Fairytale.
