Now that performance capture has become standard practice in the gaming industry, there’s very little need for old-school capture techniques like FMV sequences. However, some developers still go old-school every once in a while just to rekindle that classic nostalgia that helped shape computer gaming back in the 1990s. One such game is Back From Hell, the utilizing digitized video capture techniques for the characters in a puzzle adventure title from Photoplay Games.

Set during 15th century Spain, players will take on the role of a farmer attempting to survive during tough times, only to be captured and killed and sent to Hell. The game centers on the journey back from Hell, hence the title Back From Hell.

Photoplay Games states on the Kickstarter page that the title doesn’t use out and out full motion video for entire scenes, but they did use digital full motion video capture for the characters, similar to Mortal Kombat.

Part of the game reminds me a lot of Conqueror AD 1086, which you can pick up from most abandonware sites these days. The mix of full motion digital character capture and old-school hack-and-slash combat brought back a lot of memories, especially for games like Quest For Glory and Phantasmagoria.

Like many games from back in the day, there’s a healthy mix of exploration, NPC interaction and various puzzles to solve throughout the journey.

I imagine this is the kind of game that is targeting more of the old-school gamer who really enjoyed the classic games like Police Quest or Gabriel Knight.

Photoplay Games is currently seeking just over $102,000 for Back From Hell, and they have around 27 days to go as of the writing of this article. It’s likely going to be a tough sell for the average young gamer unless they really love medieval fantasy games, old-school puzzle games, or have a penchant for Spanish culture.
