Mass Effect: Andromeda Cinematic Trailer Teases Massive Boss Fights

EA and BioWare let loose a new trailer for Mass Effect: Andromeda. The trailer focuses on the events leading up to Andromeda, how various humans escaped just before the relays went kaput in Mass Effect 3 and how they were slumbering for a while thereafter.

The trailer is inter-cut with some action sequences I can’t really make out, but they show the brother and sister duo who will be the main characters in the upcoming game. You can check out the trailer below.

Apparently the ship that the new characters were traveling on crashed on a planet and they have to fight their way off. We see a cinematic alien beast screaming at them, a hint at a new enemy foe, as well as a few scenes of the locations that players will apparently visit throughout the game.

The trailer does tease a really awesome looking giant boss battle in some desert ruins, but I sure do hope that you don’t just stand there with a pea shooter tickling that gigantic thing on some highlighted points. Hopefully it’s a much smarter boss fight than the B-movie antics we might expect from Lost Planet or Earth Defense Force.

The rest of the trailer is just a collection of huge bass drops and some stuff I don’t really get. They talk about gravity wells and about certain people being chosen, but it’s a rehashed cliché we’ve come to expect from just about every epic sci-fi story.

I think the trailer really needed to convey a sense of coherency on a couple of things. First: who is this crew you’re with and what are they trying to do? We know that players take on the role of the Pathfinder but why is the Pathfinder important in the context of the mission that they’re on? And who is the villain or at least what is the villain trying to do?

I understand that they’re trying to keep it mysterious and all, but they also haven’t given gamers much reason to feel invested in this new journey.

They still have time, though. It’s a bit different from Rockstar teasing Red Dead Redemption 2, which focused on the cool tech and what gamers can expect as far as immersion is concerned. We don’t get much of a tech showcase in the trailer above for Mass Effect: Andromeda, and the story is being depicted in a pretty hazy way.

But again, we’ll likely learn more leading up to its release next year for PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One and PC.
