The First Tree: Story-driven Adventure Game Enters Steam Greenlight

Fans of Journey, Shelter and Firewatch might be interested in this indie game that was developed by David “Whelly” Wehle.

The First Tree is a story-driven adventure game that follows the story of a family, and a parallel story of a Fox looking for her baby cubs. The first thing you’ll probably notice with The First Tree is its art style and the beautiful visual eye candy of the environments.

The screenshots and trailer showcases lush grasslands, large ponds with reflective water, moonlit skylines and forests filled with butterflies. The First Tree will not only be a narrated story experience, but also a visual story experience to immerse you into the world the developer has created. Not much else is really known about the story because the developer has been intentionally tight lipped about it to keep it a surprise.

The First Tree is made using Unity 5 with the help of a few asset packs to help bring the game together, things like third person controller support and the stylized nature pack. It sounds like the developer doesn’t have a team working with him, so as a small indie game maker it makes sense to use additional resources to get the game in a playable and functional state, and based on what has been demonstrated so far, it looks like it has all come together rather well.

The First Tree plays out as a third person, puzzle platform adventure game, as you journey through one gorgeous landscape after another. The developer put together a gameplay teaser trailer to showcase the game, so take a look at the video that I linked down below.

The First Tree is currently scheduled for an early 2017 release date because Wheely says the game still has quite a bit of work to do. Upon release, The developer says that the final game will be relatively short and will be about an hour and a half long, and will release for a low price point around $5 USD.

If you are interested in following the progress for The First Tree, you can head on over to the Steam Greenlight page to cast your vote.
