Gore Verbinski’s A Cure For Wellness looks to be an unorthodox psychological thriller; one of those movies that leave you questioning and second guessing yourself from the title screen to the credit roll. The latest trailer for the movie lays out the plot and lets movie goers know that this visually chilling gem will hit theaters on February 17th, 2017.
The movie features an executive sent to recover the CEO of a company who appears to have gone missing – or rather, refuses to come home after retreating to a special facility high up in the Swiss Alps. The remote location is home to an assortment of rehabilitation treatments that seem to extend far beyond the normal medical standards of known science. The trailer is very well put together and it doesn’t betray any of the movie’s deeper plot points or potential twists. It’s well shot, well edited and visually spectacular. This is the kind of film that puts the scares back into the horror genre. It’s one of those movies that has real frights based on potential real-world fears: being trapped in a hospital where they perform all sorts of mind-altering experiments on you.
The face constrictor and some of the lab equipment seemed to hint at nods toward Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange. Despite being set in modern times, there’s a visual element of the old, the classic, the romantic character of European countrysides and rustic structures.
It’s hard to tell exactly how a movie like this will unfold, but there’s no denying that it looks well shot, and parts of it reminded me of Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Lobster fused with Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island.
If the movie plays out anywhere near as slick as the theatrical trailer, then Verbinski will have yet another surefire winner on his hands.
