Studio Zero and Atlus have announced that they’re working on a new classical JRPG called Project Re Fantasy. The news was picked up by Gematsu, who reported that Persona director Katsura Hashino, along with Persona artist Shigenori Soejima, and composer Shoji Meguro are teaming up to work on this new fantasy JRPG.
According to Persona Central, Studio Zero laid out their philosophy for the codenamed Project Re Fantasy, explaining…
“Now, in continuation to these projects created by Atlus, comes forth a new one,” he wrote. “What is the next concept to tackle and address in RPGs? To challenge the norms naturally consumed by gamers for decades. I think that this, in particular, is a challenge to the genre. The challenge is about to begin right now. And I would like you to stand with me as we start the challenge—as we start from zero.”
All this talk about challenging the norms and pushing the boundaries wasn’t put forward into a void with idle text, they followed up this announcement with an actual teaser trailer that you can check out below, courtesy of Gameplay News.
The teaser trailer is in full Japanese, but they showcase a few environmental sequences with some LARPers in the background.
The trailer basically talks about reinventing the JRPG genre with a new take on what gamers are to expect from the new Studio Zero. It ends with the title Project Re Fantasy: A Fool’s Journey Begins.
It’s noted that the trio of big names working on this upcoming project previously put some time and energy into Catherine, a subversive examination into the psychology of infidelity. If this upcoming game is basically the JRPG version of what Catherine was to adventure dramas, then gamers are going to be in for one heck of a ride.
They don’t detail the platforms that the game is coming out on, but they do mention that consoles are obviously on the table. It should probably go without saying that the PS4 and PS4 Pro will be top priority.
