PSX 2016: Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy Hits PS4 Spring, 2017

Vicarious Visions announced that they’ve had the pleasure of completely remastering, redoing and remaking the original Crash Bandicoot trilogy. They’re compiling all three games into one big title known as Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy.

The project was announced at this year’s PlayStation Experience in Anaheim, California. They made the announcement with an accompanying minute and a half long trailer featuring the new and improved gameplay based on the originals that made waves back during the golden age of gaming in the 1990s. You can check out the trailer below.

The trailer reveals the new and improved Crash. The in-game graphics are now cinematic quality, and the spinning marsupial still runs along linear paths as he spin-attacks crabs, jumps on boxes and dodges obstacles.

Over on the PlayStation Blog Vicarious Vision’s game director, Dan Tanguay, explained that they couldn’t just take the old assets and redo them like a lot of remasters lazily taken and re-released from the seventh generation of gaming. They’ve had to remake everything as close to the originals as possible.

Tanguay explains…

“It’s practically impossible to make a traditional remaster of the original Naughty Dog games. They’re roughly 20 years old, and technology has advanced significantly in that time. The original code and assets are nearly unusable. Nearly.

“[…] Using the original level geometry from Naughty Dog as a guide, we rebuilt the Crash gameplay from scratch, capturing its simplicity and precision. As the levels began to take shape, we layered in our own lush and zany art, animation, and audio.”

They also redid all of the cinematics inspired by the originals on the PlayStation One.

The enemies, the sounds, the physics, the gameplay mechanics – all of them have been remade and updated for the PlayStation 4. It’s almost weird because you would think that maybe they would just make a new game instead of remaking the originals?

Anyway, Activisoin and Vicarious Visions plan on releasing Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy in the spring of 2017 for PS4.
